I spend a lot of my time on different social networks, talking to people from all different walks of life. However I’ve come across lots of people in the LGBT Community who stay silent.
With everything going on right now, a large amount of people are adding the Equality symbol to their profile pictures and what not. Most of which are doing it for likes. The thing that bothers me is that it seems like the people in the community wanting equality aren’t doing much to achieve it. Simply adding the symbol to a picture isn’t going to have much of an impact. Especially if you’re not informing people as to what it means and why you’re using it.
Instead of simply changing a profile picture or sending out a single tweet, why don’t you fight for your rights. I feel like this movement is slowly losing steam because so many people in the LGBT community are getting lazy and sitting back just expecting things to change. Look back in history and you’ll see it won’t work that way. You have to be consistent, you have to educate people, you have to be involved.
Now I’m not an activist, I don’t go out to events or anything like that. However I feel like I try my best to educate people on the issues at hand. I’ll fight for my community but I won’t do it alone. It’s just upsetting seeing so many people identify as LGBT and then turn around and watch the LGBT ally’s handle these situations. They’re YOUR rights, so don’t make everyone else do all the work.
Even just talking to someone in your family who is on the fence about the issue can seriously help out the cause. Keep up to date with the community and just world events in general so that you have the ability to fight back when the time comes. I don’t expect everyone to go to every court hearing, every public event, or every parade. But you should be doing something, you should be feeding the fire so that we can finally be treated as equals.
Go to some websites, make some phone calls, sign some petitions, just find a way to do something. Stop making the rest of the community come to a stand still because you don’t feel the need to voice yourself. You’re in this whether you like it or not, these issues do effect you whether you want to acknowledge that or not.
