Before we start! If you’re religious and you’re easily offended by people picking apart your beliefs then I suggest you leave.
Over the last few days I’ve gotten myself in a few debates around the internet over Gay Marriage. I’ve seen many different arguments and many people’s tolerance completely diminish. I acknowledge that every religion, every person, and every region is at a different point when it comes to equality. With that said I want everyone to know that this mainly focuses on the United States and mostly Christianity and Catholicism. I may or may not raise different points for different regions/religions.
I do not hate religion and I don’t hate people who follow it. To each their own. But at the same time with so many people willing to bash and push equality back in the name of “God” and I’ve decided it’s time to fire back. I’ve personally had hurtful things directed to me but unlike you I turned the other cheek. I’m not silent anymore. It’s not right to use your religion to judge others, we should all know that by now. Your religion has caused so much hate and war that I want nothing to do with it. Don’t get me wrong, there are things I do like about religion. Loving everyone and not judging. Living your life and enjoying the gifts. But what happens when you’re hateful and judging, when you live life based on extremely dated stories and you no longer enjoy those gifts.
As a gay man I take equality seriously and I will fight for my rights. I will not let you bully me into believing YOU over myself. I’m not often offended by people’s views, whether or not they match mine, however some things have gotten under my skin from time to time. These thoughts have been accumulating in my head and I just now realized I should voice my opinion and let them flow so this may go on for a bit. So let’s begin, shall we?
One thing I’ve heard a disgusting amount of times is “God says being gay is a sin.” Let me clarify something, God did NOT say that because God did not write the bible. In all reality sinning human beings like you and I actually wrote it, and on top of that, we rewrote it! But if you believe that that’s what God said than don’t just pick and choose. Follow it all and maybe you’ll realize how insane your God must be. So many things throughout history have been thrown out because people realized how harmful it truly was to people. They realized how ridiculous some of their practices were. So you might as well get rid of the one that is mentioned ONE time in the bible.
Another thing that I’ve been hearing recently is that the LGBT community is the cause of many disasters. Natural and man-made. I honestly didn’t think I had that much power over the all mighty God, but oddly enough people do believe it. Now ignoring how psychotic that really sounds considering it actually has not a single tie to homosexuality, I’d like to raise a point. Is it honestly wise to pick on the people who can upset god that much? It would be unfortunate if you upset us and we decided to really upset god. The whole world would end. Well, at least by that logic it would.
“It’s just not natural.” Well I’ve yet to hear someone actually come up with a valid statement to back it up. Homosexuality has been observed in numerous species and it’s dated back just like heterosexuality. The difference is it was punishable by death and was not in any way accepted so for a large part of history not many people identified as LGBT. I was told by a teacher in middle school that “Something becomes natural when it’s repeated itself numerous times.” I feel it applies to homosexuality. It’s just as natural as heterosexuality, it’s just not as common. I personally think saying it’s not natural is the worst point you could bring up simply because you’re not to say what is and what isn’t. Not only that but like I said, never heard something substantial to back up that claim.
“Marriage is sacred and it’s meant to be between a man and a woman!” This one is one of those statements that are thrown around the most. It’s repetitive and like most claims it’s not really backed by much. Marriage stopped being sacred when you could marry a stranger and divorce them the next day. It stopped being sacred when it became tied into the government. Times have changed and it’s time people start realizing that their bible isn’t caught up to these times. It’s outdated to say the least.
Now I don’t know how many people will read this, but if anyone’s made it this far, you’re awesome! But I’m not done quite yet! Just a few more points and we’ll be done.
- If marriage is sacred to your religion I understand. But if that’s the sole reason you don’t think gay marriage should be legal than I think your legal rights when it comes to marriage should be stripped. Make marriage strictly a religious practice. No benefits what so ever other than having ‘Gods’ blessing.
- If you’re going to take a single line that’s interpreted to be against homosexuality than please follow every word in Leviticus. It’s not okay to ignore everything else and pretend it doesn’t exist or that it’s not relevant.
- Realize that Gay Marriage will not in fact harm you, your family, or your beliefs. If you still think it’s a sin just let us sin and face our judgement on our own. We’re not your problem and you don’t have to worry about us
- Many churches acknowledge and welcome the LGBT community, if they interpret the bible differently than neither side of it is valid and should not be used in government.
These are 4 very simple solutions and they are all doable as long as people are willing to get over themselves and let people have the freedom they deserve.
I would appreciate feedback and your opinions on this subject. Comments and emails will be responded to, it doesn’t matter where you stand on the matter. I would just like to hear your opinions, I mean, this is The Interwebz!
