I’m a big fan of rap, I always have been. However, for quite a while I feel like it had a slightly damaging effect on me. Not because the violence or anything like that. But because it was laced with homophobic slurs. Rappers calling each other “faggots” and what not. Being a gay male, it would bother me sometimes. Knowing that what I am was an insult to someone else. However, I’ve been seeing a change in the music industry. More artists are supporting the LGBT Community.
Right now Macklemore is a pretty big supporter. Publicly coming out and saying he supports and even putting out a song. (It’s the video embedded at the top.) Other rappers have come out to support, but there’s still not enough. The world is changing and EVERYONE will have to adapt to it. If they don’t they’ll be left behind and forgotten, or worse, remembered as a hateful person. I can only hope that in the near future more and more artists will show where they stand, whether it’s good or bad.
But anyways, the song posted is truly beautiful and I’m sure has done quite a bit of good for people. People who are out, in the closet, or confused. No matter what your orientation is I suggest you give the song a listen.
